Alistair McGowan presents Nottingham recruitment business with major industry award
TV impressionist Alistair McGowan was on hand to present a top trade award to a Nottingham recruitment business which has this year celebrated a “spectacular” trading performance.
Tomlin Personnel, based at Aspect Business Centre in Bulwell, collected the Recruitment Agency of the Year prize at a glittering ceremony at The Recruit Venture Group awards in London on Saturday (October 13).
The business, which has only recently celebrated its third anniversary, increased its turnover by over £1 million to £3.2 million over the past year. Tomlin Personnel specialises in logistics and driving jobs and has more than 2,000 drivers registered currently.
Rob Tomlinson, Tomlin Personnel Managing Director said that three new staff have had to be employed this year to cope with demand, and they are now taking on a new client every week on average.
Rob Tomlinson said: ““This award is great recognition of all the effort that the team has put in over the year. We are all pulling in the same direction, making sure our clients are better looked after, while always pushing to convert new customers.
“As well as driving turnover up by over £1 million, our gross profit for 2017/18 was itself not far off £1 million. It was a little over half that for 2016/17. The growth is exciting.
“Being in the heart of the East Midlands, close to centres like the Castle Donington logistics park and the upcoming East Midlands Gateway featuring Amazon and Nestle, among others, means we couldn’t be in a better position when it comes to the logistics and driving sectors. Our location close to the M1 means we are at the centre of it all, and the prospects for further growth look good. The East Midlands doesn’t get the attention of the Northern Powerhouse, but we are attracting some huge global businesses and that’s great for jobs in our area.”
Awards organiser The Recruit Venture Group funds and supports independent recruitment start-ups across the UK in joint venture arrangements. Each year it hosts a major awards evening contested by the independent recruitment businesses it is partnered with, of which Tomlin Personnel is one of nearly 50.
Judging the awards were David Head, CEO of industry publisher Recruitment International and Paul Mizen, Managing Director of The Recruit Venture Group. They were looking for a business that showed outstanding financial performance, as well demonstrating innovation and the ability to go the extra mile for clients and workers.
Paul Mizen said: ““Tomlin Personnel had to fight off competition from some excellent businesses, but ultimately their results on the balance sheet spoke for themselves. They have made some clever adjustments to how they cater for clients, giving them more attention, while also having a laser-like focus on monitoring their performance. It has resulted in a spectacular set of figures this year.
“There’s no doubt the East Midlands is an exciting place to be if you are in logistics and driving recruitment and I fully expect that Tomlin Personnel will continue to grow, and continue to create more jobs of its own as demand increases.”
The family-run business, which includes Mr Tomlinson’s wife Sally as director, operates across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire and caters to national and global businesses as well as smaller enterprises.
Mr Tomlinson had worked in the recruitment sector since 2010 before deciding to launch Tomlin Personnel in 2015, with support from The Recruit Venture Group.
